About

General ASSEMBLY

Founded in 2023 by Melanie Ashton, General Assembly is a contemporary art gallery dedicated to championing ambitious artistic practices and supporting the next generation of voices. For Melanie, collecting and presenting art is is rooted in the conviction that art has the power to enhance how we live, shaping not only how we see the world but how we experience it.

Alongside its London exhibition program, General Assembly extends this ethos to an artist residency at Melanie’s home in the Loire Valley, France. The residency is a gesture of both hospitality and patronage, offering artists time, space, and renewal in the countryside. This personal investment underscores Melanie’s belief that nurturing creativity at pivotal stages can profoundly shape an artist’s trajectory.

The gallery champions rigorous, historically informed, and critically engaged practices. The result is a program of exhibitions that are both clever and genuine, affirming the essential role of art in today’s visual culture.

At its core, General Assembly embodies Melanie’s vision: a gallery and residency that celebrates art’s power to transform, enriching individual lives, connecting us to one another, and cultivating vibrant communities that shape the culture of tomorrow.
